February 2024

Modernism Week Studio Tour

February 23–24, 11 am – 4 pm

Elaine and I are busy again! We are showing a new selection of our paintings during Modernism Week on 23/24 February 11 am to 4 pm. Elaine Asarch has once again opened up her studio located at 68733 Perez Rd C-6 in Cathedral City. We are sharing the space with Lorien Suárez-Kanerva.   My chosen artist and painting for Modernism Week is Composition by Willem de Kooning.   The emotion and passion in de Kooning's paintings moved me profoundly as a young Scottish art student in the mid 1970's, but it was only in the last decade, when my work moved from figurative to abstraction, did I realize that many aspects of his work–his lack of one focal point, his reworking canvases multiple times, and his energetic brush strokes–all related to my own interpretation of the world.

I spent the morning painting at the Living Desert last week with my friend and amazing artist DJ Hall. I completed this watercolor from part of the butterfly garden. If you get to the desert, it is well worth a visit, happy animals, happy visitors!

Two paintings are in exhibitions this month. My painting Memories of Giverny is currently on show in the juried show Bloom, curated by Kristine Schomaker at the Brewery, Los Angeles, until Sunday 25 February. My painting, Misty Morning is in another juried show, Los Angeles Art Association’s  REPUTED, an all-media exploration of an artist's "signature" style or exemplar of their work.  The show is available to view online until 15 March 2024.
